Ever lay in bed at night and think: "I'm gonna make some video game controller icons". No? Well, that's what I did, and thus Controllercons was born.
As it turns out, designing icons is hard. Video game controllers are all shapes and sizes, and making sure the icons looked good on their own and as part of a larger collection was difficult. I also decided to design three styles of icons to really stress myself out.
The trickiest part was maintaining legibility at smaller sizes and the struggle of sacrificing enough detail whilst retaining what makes the controllers unique.
I designed the Controllercons website to show off the icons first and foremost, but I also included extensive documentation of all their use cases. I also wanted the site to have an air of playfulness with some simple interactions, but to avoid animating everything to a distracting degree.
To date, Controllercons has 30 icons (each with three styles), spanning the last four decades of video game history. It's a project I've really enjoyed working on over the years.
